The Trusts' Founding Charitable Purposes

The Ikoku Foundations consist of The Chinyere and Chinelo Ikoku Foundation and The Alvan Azinna Chibuzo Ikoku Foundation. The Foundations are funded by The Chinyere and Chinelo Ikoku Charitable Trusts. And the nature, mission, charitable purposes, and vision of our philanthropy are described below.

Nature and General Purpose

The Ikoku Trusts and Foundations are independent, private, non-governmental, non-religious, non-profit organizations that serve the public interest in Africa and its global diasporas, and account for the past while ensuring a shared and just future.

Overarching Mission

Our overarching mission and emphases of support are for good works that help the public understand Africa’s essential place in a global future, one that is to be more knowledgeable, environmentally sound, and equitable; and furthermore of deep benefit for communities inhabiting shared and complex societies.

A Relationship with Africa

The majority of our funded works therefore bear a substantive relationship to Africa. They deepen our collective knowledge of the full, varied range of ethnic, gendered, raced, and religious peoples of African descent. They study, give account of, and improve the ways such peoples live in, develop, migrate to or from the continent. And they help us understand, intimately, how such peoples continue to contribute to the material, cultural, and intellectual conditions of modern life in Africa as well as societies in the Americas, Asia, Australasia, and Europe.

A Relationship with Global Communities

We are also inspired by a full range of peoples who have contributed to the foundations and development of their societies. Who have done so despite an equally long history of systemic difficulties. Who nevertheless maintain an unyielding belief that the betterment of their human condition will foster the betterment of those living around them, and will enhance the futures of the regularly underserved, marginalized, disenfranchised. We draw from their example a vision of the public good and common community that is our hope and objective.

Governance and Operations

The Chinyere and Chinelo Ikoku Charitable Trusts was founded under the core vision of its President, Alvan Azinna Ikoku, and incorporated in the United States along with the associated Ikoku Foundations. Below is an overview of key facets of the resulting organizations and access to further details regarding corporate governance and operations.

Philosophy and Approach

We have designed the governing structure of the Ikoku Trusts and Foundations in order to be attentive to needs and operations at the local and global level, as well as across the complex states and societies where our communities reside, living shared, interdependent lives.

01.

Governace Suited to Local and Global Philanthropy

We have designed the governing structure of the Ikoku Trusts and Foundations in order to be attentive to needs and operations at the local and global level, as well as across the complex states and societies where our communities reside, living shared, interdependent lives.

02.

With Respect Being Central to Our Ethics

At the core of our founding and governing Code of Ethics is a commitment to the most robust conceptions of respect and humanity, including and beyond what the law has protected and provided for, as we fulfill our twin mottos: to serve the public interest in Africa and its global diasporas; and to account for the past while ensuring a shared and just future.

03.

To Ensure a Shared and Just Future For Many

We are inspired by peoples who have contributed to the foundations and development of their societies, despite a history of systemic difficulties. Who maintain an unyielding belief that the betterment of their human condition will foster the betterment of those living around them, and will enhance the futures of the regularly underserved, marginalized, disenfranchised. We draw from their example a vision of the public good and common community that is our hope and objective.
